Many things and events
can cause objectionable odors. In addition to the
objectionable odor being unpleasant, many events that
cause malodor also contribute to poor IAQ (Indoor Air
Quality).
Poor indoor air
quality, as it
relates to malodors, means that there is an odor source
which has developed into an unhealthy condition, by
means of bacterial growth. Examples of these are: wet
carpet, mold and mildew, dead/decomposing mouse, rodent
/ bird / skunk / cat / dog, pigeon droppings, pet
accidents such as cat or dog urine and/or feces, vomit,
raw sewage, and rotten/spoiled food, etc. As air
currents pass across these breeding grounds for
bacterial growth, small particles of the bacteria
(spores) are carried throughout the home or building,
eventually becoming breathed by the occupants.
Permanent removal of
cigarette and cigar (tobacco) smoke odor
is becoming in demand more and more people, seeking
cleaner indoor air. Vehicles, as well as homes and
buildings can be rid of cigarette/cigar smoke odor.
Buildings which now do not allow cigarette or cigar
smoking still contain the residues and airborne odors
once created by smokers, and can be cleaned and
deodorized successfully.
Some sources of poor
air quality result from non-natural events,
such as a chemical or gasoline spill indoors, or the
burning or smoldering of synthetic materials (like
plastic, fiberglass, etc). When one of these events
occurs, the same air currents carry the resulting
malodor throughout the home or building, penetrating
porous materials while airborne (such as curtains and
drapes, carpeting, and clothing). Highly toxic compounds
are created when synthetic materials burn or smolder.
So, as you can see,
removal of odors must often be very thorough in order to
address the indoor air quality issue. Through cleaning
(source removal) of the affected areas is often a basic
essential in odor removal, to ensure safe air quality
for occupants. Special-use disinfectants can be applied
when necessary.
